May Day: Gombe Governor Salutes Nigerian workers,Tasks them to Show More Commitment, Dedication to Duty.

…Says Government Working Hard Towards Repositioning Civil Service for Efficiency, Improved Service Delivery

…As NLC Lauds Governor Inuwa for Prompt Payment of Salaries, Pensions

Gombe State Governor, Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya has charged workers in the state to exhibit commitment and dedication to duty even as he assured that his administration will continue working hard towards repositioning civil service for better efficiency, improved service delivery

Governor Inuwa Yahaya gave this indication while addressing workers in the State to mark this year’s International Workers’ Day Celebration at the Pantami Township Stadium.

The Governor described the theme for this year’s workers day celebration, “COVID – 19 Pandemic, Social and Economic Crisis: Challenges for Jobs, Social Protection and Peoples Welfare” as apt and timely because of the significant labour, economic and social disruptions caused by the pandemic.

He noted that the effects of the Covid-19 pandemic and associated measures such as lockdown have led to loss of jobs, transition to remote work and productivity losses, saying governments all over the world are experiencing economic downturn, and are struggling to pay salaries and meet the welfare needs of their workers.

He however said, “In Gombe State, we have been able to continue the payment of salaries to workers and monthly pension to retirees as at when due. Moreover, we are also able to pay billions of naira to settle outstanding pensions and gratuities inherited from previous administration, our intention is to clear all outstanding pensions and gratuities because we believe that our civil servants deserve to live in comfort and dignity after retirement”.

Governor Inuwa Yahaya used the occasion to commend the leadership of the organized labour for their resillence as well as support and cooperation on issues affecting workers and the general progress of the State.

He assured them of his administration’s unwavering commitment to provide socio-economic development to improve the well-being of people.

“As we are all aware, the Civil Service is the engine room for the implementation of Government policies and programmes. It is in consideration of this that our administration is working hard towards repositioning the civil service for better efficiency and improved service delivery. To this end, we have established the Bureau of Public Service Reforms to spearhead the transformation of our civil service. We are also embarking on ambitious housing projects to cater for the welfare needs of our civil servants”.

The Governor said he is fully aware of the challenges affecting workers in the State, noting that since assumption of office, his administration has been working with the NLC leadership on how to better improve the welfare and working condition of the state’s civil servants.

He explained that Gombe State is among the first States that implemented the 30,000-minimum wage, though it had to suspend it due to the pandemic and eventually bring it back as promised, immediately after the economic situation had stabilized.

Governor Inuwa Yahaya called on civil servants to demonstrate commitment and dedication in the discharge of their responsibilities, saying Government will not condone the culture of laziness and ineptitude that characterized the service over the years.

Earlier in his address, chairman of Nigeria Labour Congress, Gombe state chapter, Comrade Muhammad Adamu Musa explained that workers day celebration is to commemorate the struggles of workers around the world for the advancement of their rights to humane condition of work and enhanced welfare.

The Gombe NLC chairman lauded Governor Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya for the prompt payment of workers salaries and pensions as well as the restoration of the 30,000 minimum wage to workers in the State which was earlier suspended due to a dip in the economy occasioned by the covid-19 Pandemic.

Comrade Adamu Musa also praised the Governor for the release of 1.5 billion naira and the 775 million naira respectively for the payment of first and second tranches of gratuities arrears to retired civil servants in the State.

He appealed to the Governor to consider the extension of the 30,000 minimum wage to local Government workers in the State.

On his part the controller of labour in the State, comrade Magaji Lamido said the rights of Trade Union is guaranteed under a democratic environment and therefore want to pursue their demands within the confines of the law.

Highlights of the occasion include march pass by the industrial unions and cultural performance.

It will be recalled that the state Commissioner of Finance, Muhammad Gambo Magaji had earlier announced that no fewer than 668 workers in Gombe State have been suspended from the payroll following the commencement of the implementation of biometrics.

He said the affected workers did not show up for verification after the commencement of the enrollment, hence their suspension from the payroll.

The commissioner said 431 workers from the 84 ministries, departments and agencies (MDAs) of the state were affected.

He said the biometrics had been piloted in two local governments – Gombe and Akko – and also in the Local Education Authority (LEA) of both local governments.
According to him, in Gombe LG, a total of 103 staff didn’t show up for the biometrics comprising 44 LG staff and 59 LEA staff.

Gombe Governor Receives Minister of State for Transportation.

…Makes case for Resuscitation of Port Harcourt-Gombe-Maiduguri Rail Line

…As Governor Inuwa Becomes NITT Ambassador in North East

Governor Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya of Gombe State has informed the visiting Minister of State for Transportation, Senator Gbemisola Rukayyat Saraki that the rail line connecting the North Eastern corridor of the country has been the most neglected, hence the urgent need for the Federal Government to expedite action towards its resuscitation.

Governor Inuwa Yahaya gave this indication when he granted audience to the Minister of state for Transportatation who paid him a courtesy visit at the Government House ahead of the commissioning ceremony of the Nigerian Institute of Transport Technology, NITT’ Gombe Outreach Learning Centre in Kumo.

The Governor noted that no reasonable manager of human resources can do without transportation due to the critical role it plays in the movement of goods and services, describing the siting of the Gombe outreach learning centre of the NITT in Kumo as a welcome development for the people of the State and by extension, the North East subregion.

Governor Inuwa Yahaya observed that the centre will not only assist the youths in acquiring skills for the proper management of transportation in the zone, but will also help equip them with relevant skills for self employment, especially in such a time when jobs are hard to find by both the educated and the uneducated.

He said, “Recently we set up a portal to find out the numbers of the unemployed, believe you me I was shocked to realize that we have 4752 unemployed graduates that registered, some of them have been unemployed for more than 6 years waiting for the white colar job. That is only for the graduates for you, 24 of them with first class honours and when we extended it to OND and NCE holders, within 24 hours more than 750 registered and I believe by now we should be counting thousands”.

He however expressed optimism that the NITT centre will provide a fertile ground for the teeming unemployed youths in the State to acquire skills that will benefit them in the future.

The Governor informed the visiting Minister that his administration is investing heavily in the transportation sector through its flagship programme, the network Eleven-Hundred which seeks to construct at least one hundred kilometres of roads in each of the eleven Local Government Areas of the State thereby linking up the State to ease the movement of goods and services.

He stressed the need for the Federal Ministry of Transportation to facilitate the restoration of railway services in the North East sub-region as it is a priority to the people of the zone, adding that his administration will do everything necessary to support the institute in particular and transportation sector in general.

Earlier speaking, the Minister of State for Transportation, Senator Gbemisola Rukayyat Saraki told Governor Inuwa Yahaya how strategic the State is to the growth and development of the Transportation sector in the North East zone of the country as well as the role NITT can play in providing the needed manpower for improving transport and logistics management operations not only in Gombe State but the entire zone.

The Minister sought the support and patronage of the Gombe State Government towards the programmes and services the Nigerian Institute of Transport Technology NITT offers, just as she craved the indulgence of Governor Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya to be the institute’s Ambassador in the NorthEast.

She appealed to Governor Inuwa Yahaya as well as his counterparts in the North East sub-region to mobilize youths in their respective states to enroll in the institute skills acquisition training programmes with a view to reducing unemployment in the zone.

The Minister said the administration of President Muhammadu Buhari is working to revamp the economy to which the transport sector is one, saying the Federal Government through the Ministry of Transportation is investing heavily towards the revitalization of rail lines across the country to restore rail transport to Nigerians like the Port Harcourt/Gombe/Maiduguri rail line.

Gombe Governor Hosts National Assembly Joint Committee on Aviation.

…Says his Administration will Work with NASS towards Upgrade of Gombe Airport to International Standard

Governor Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya says his administration will work with the National Assembly and relevant authorities to ensure the take over and standardization of the Gombe Airport by the Federal Government such that the state can leverage on what it generates to provide more services to the people.

Governor Inuwa Yahaya stated this when he granted audience to members of the National Assembly Joint Committee on Aviation led by Senator Smart Adeyemi and Hon. Nnoli Nnaji, Chairmen of Senate and House of Representatives committees on Aviation respectively.

The Governor described the services rendered by the Gombe Airport as National and International and therefore aligned with standardization of the airport through its complete take over by the Federal Government since the State does not have enough resources to do so.

He said any improvement on the Gombe Airport is not only to the State economy and social wellbeing but that of the North East sub-region and the country as a whole.

“We shall go to any length to see that we get reprieve with this Airport and to see that there is an improvement on it for the people of the Federal Republic of Nigeria”.

The Governor described the mission of the National Assembly Joint committee on Aviation to Gombe as a milestone for the people of the State and by extension the entire country, saying of all the previous efforts by successive administrations that changed the fortunes of Gombe and brought the state to limelight, the Airport stands out as one undisputed asset.

He however observed that despite the development the Gombe Airport brought to the State, the facility has placed huge financial burden on the state because Government has consistently supported and funded it since establishment.

“We financed the establishement of the Airport and we are equally financing its operations and is becoming very cumbersome on the State Government, especially in view of the current financial squeeze occasioned by covid-19 and the downturn of the economy that affect Gombe State”.

He said the Gombe Airport, which is very strategic in view of our location, has continuously served the people of the State and Nigerians in different capacities, noting that the last of such services was the movement of the covid-19 vaccine to the State.

Governor Inuwa Yahaya said his earlier interface with the Chairmen of the Aviation committees of the Senate and House of Representatives was aimed at pushing for take over of the facility by the Federal Government in order to standardize the facility and remove its burden on the state Government.

He noted that being the second to the last on the Federation allocation table, Gombe needs all the support it can get to relief itself from its financial burden and leverage on the resources therein to provide services to the people.

“We are very proud of what we are doing, this is a government of change, it is a government of reform and whatever we are doing is touching on the lives of the people, so if the Federal Government takes this Airport we shall leverage on whatever we get to do more for the people and the Airport in particular and the aviation sector in general will do better”.

The Governor told his guests that only recently the Nigerian Airforce embarked on setting up of a forward operational base in Gombe, known as combat reconnaissance group, owing to the centrality of the State in the North East and the advantages the State has in military operations especially in a region plagued by insurgency.

Earlier speaking, the Chairman, Senate Committee on Aviation, Senator Smart Adeyemi said they were in the State to inspect the Gombe Airport and to have a true picture of its challenges because as legislators they have the mandate to look at the budget and call the attention of the Federal Government on areas of needs.

He said the Aviation industry plays a key role in the socio-economic development of any nation, hence the need for the NASS members to embark on facility tours across the country with a view to coming up with legislative interventions that will see to improving and securing airports across the country.

Senator Adeyemi commended the progressive disposition of Governor Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya which he said is evident in the well built roads network and layouts as well as cleanliness of the state capital among other developmental strides by his administration.

Also speaking, the Chairman, House committee on Aviation, Hon. Nnoli Nnaji described the presence of the Airport in Gombe as very important and strategic considering the centrality of the State in the North East subregion.

He said the National Assembly Joint committee will spare no effort towards ensuring that the Federal Government takes over the Airport so that it can be improved upon to have a cargo terminal.

The National Assembly members were later led on a facility tour of the local and international wings of the Airport by Gombe state Deputy Governor, Dr. Manassah Daniel Jatau.
