Gombe Governor Suspends Proceedings on Selection of Mai Tangle.

Gombe Governor Suspends Proceedings on Selection of Mai Tangle

…Says No Official Pronouncement Made on Appointment of New Mai

…Emphasizes”It is Within my Powers to Appoint any of the Three Recommended Candidates as Mai

…Calls on Traditional, Religious Opinion Leaders to Prevail on Their People on Need to Remain Calm, Peaceful, Law Abiding

Gombe State Governor, Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya has suspended all proceedings leading to the selection of a new traditional ruler of Tangale Chiefdom until peace is fully restored to the troubled area which has seen days of violent protests.

Governor Inuwa Yahaya announced the decision in a statewide broadcast shortly after returning from Billiri where he went to ascertain the extent of damage caused by the violence.

The Governor, on behalf of the Gombe State Government extended his condolences and sympathies to the families of those who lost their lives or properties in the unfortunate incident.

He assured the people of the State that in line with his oath of office, he will do everything within his powers to protect the lives and property of the citizenry.

“We are a people known for our cherished peace and stability. Violence, sectarianism and extremism have no place in our culture and tradition, those conflict merchants who seek to profit from this violence by setting brothers upon brothers, families upon families, and communities upon communities, will soon be made to face the full wrath of the law”.

He recalled that following the demise of His Royal Highness, late Abdu Buba Maisheru II, and in line with established laws and traditions, his administration had set in motion the process for the selection of a new Mai.

The process, he said was transparent and devoid of any interference, leading to the forwarding of three (3) recommended candidates by the Tangale traditional Kingmakers, from among whom his administration will select the one to fill the vacant stool of Mai Tangle as the law provides.

“As Governor, I approached the Mai Tangale succession process with high sense of responsibility because, as part of Gombe State’s cultural tradition, any decision I take will have far reaching implication on not only the Tangale chiefdom but the entire Gombe State”.

This was why the Governor said, his administration would have to undertake widespread consultations, conduct background checks and engage in personal reflection in order to arrive at a decision that is in the best interest of the people and the state.

“Let it be clear that it is within my powers as governor to appoint any of the three recommended candidates to become the new Mai Tangle. Let it also be clear that no official pronouncement was made about any candidate before, during and after the eruption of violence in Billiri Local Government Area”.

He said the violence was orchestrated by some unpatriotic individuals who thought they could blackmail the government into announcing their preferred candidate.

Governor Inuwa Yahaya also made it clear that his administration will never cow into any blackmail, threat, intimidation or witch-hunt from any individual or group no matter how highly placed.

He said, “the people of Gombe State have a history of peaceful coexistence and interrelationship among our various tribes and religions”.

This relationship according to the Governor should not be allowed to suffer because of the selfish interest of some violent minority who seek to turn the succession process into a religious contest.

“The succession battle is a Tangale cum Gombe State affair and all the three recommended candidates are eminently qualified Tangale princes by virtue of their royal ancestry to the Mai Tangale stool”.

He said by history, and in accordance with the constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, religion is not a criteria in selecting the new Mai Tangale or any public officer for that matter.

The Governor said the eruption of violence in Billiri LGA has left his administration with no option than to declare a 24-hour curfew to further stem the spread of violence, loss of lives and destruction of property.

“To this end, Government is withholding any decision on the new Mai Tangale until normalcy returns to the affected communities”.

The Governor noted with dismay the dangerous campaign of incitement and polarization waged by some unscrupulous elements on social media, saying government will vigorously discharge its role of protecting innocent citizens and combating criminality and violence anywhere in Gombe State.

He called on traditional, religious and opinion leaders to prevail on their people on the need to remain calm, peaceful and law abiding.

He equally called on the media to refrain from promoting fake news and other divisive and inciteful narratives, adding that government in collaboration with relevant security agencies has put in place adequate measures to ensure the protection of lives and property of all the people living in Gombe State.

“Our cherished peace and stability in Gombe State is bigger than the selfish interest or ambition of any individual or group”

Governor Inuwa Yahaya used the opportunity to thank the good people of Gombe State and friends across the world for their continued support and prayers, especially in these trying times.

He said his administration will continue to pursue its genuine developmental agenda for the people across all areas of economic and social endeavors.

“We will neither be blackmailed nor distracted from our noble path of maintaining peace, promoting friendly coexistence and delivering democratic dividends to all our people”.

He said the task of providing peace and development in Gombe State is a collective responsibility that all men and women of goodwill should join hands to promote.

An Open Letter to President Muhammadu Buhari from Senior Staff Union of Colleges of Education,Nigeria (SSUCOEN). By Ben Ngwakwe,Gombe.

The Senior Staff Union of Colleges of Education Nigeria has written an open letter in which they Marshalled their demands and agitations in it.
These demands which was technically unattended to as when due bored on the affairs and growth of colleges of education in Nigeria.
For instance, the Senior Staff Union of Colleges of Education in Nigeria,(SSUCOEN), has written to the President and the Minister of Education in different times and seasons marshalling out their demands and problems facing the Institution which could also help his administration move forward geometrically, incidentally it fell on deaf ears leading to the open letter when other channels of communication have failed to address their problems.
In an open letter addressed to President Muhammadu Buhari on 15th February, 2021 which was signed by the National President, Mr Danladi Ali Msheliza and National Secretary, Mr Nwenyi Leo Isioma and made available to Journalists categorically stated their positions and grievances in the said statement.
As the father of the Nation, the Union expressed their appreciation to the Federal Government for yielding to the prolonged and sustained agitations by the Union and other sister Unions in the Tertiary Education sector.
The Union, no doubt, expressed their concerns about the non-release of the White Paper on 2012 Visitation Panel to Colleges of Education, which could been the basis for which the newly constituted Visitation Panel would anchor her assignments, with a view to achieving her terms of reference.
It could also aimed at solving the teething problems and gaps in the general administration, infrastructure and funding needs of public Colleges of Education as well as aimed at sustaining industrial harmony.
But the current happenings now in the education sector have created doubts and misgivings “to express our doubts on what the government intends to achieve with the constitution of the Visitation Panels to Colleges, at this time, without the release of the white paper on the last Visitation Panel”.
“Hence, we wish to opine that for the Visitation Panels to carry out their assignments successfully, the following questions need to be answered & addressed”.
These questions, the Union asked was first,”on what basis would the Panels commence their assignments without the white paper on the last Visitation, which would have been the basis (take off point) for the intended visitation?”.
Secondly “what does government intends to achieve?”, pointing out further that “what is delaying the release of the report of the last Visitation Panel to Colleges of Education, about nine (9) years after the last Visitation?”.
Lamenting further on their unattended question is, ” what has the Federal Government done on the report (if any) of the last Visitation Panel, to justify the terms of reference given to the newly constituted Visitation Panels?”.
“Why are there no Academics and Administrators from Colleges of Education subsector, on the composition of Chairmen and members of the Visitation Panels to Colleges, who would have been in the best position to know the workings of the subsector?”.
“How would the Panels examine the quality of leadership of the Institutions in terms of the roles of Governing Councils, when there is no Council in place for Colleges (despite our continued agitations to constitute Governing Councils)?”.
This education sector which is responsible for affairs and growth of the Colleges of Education in Nigeria is making serious agitations and demands which any serious and purposeful administration should listen to, but the case is different at this time of filling the report.
The Union not done with the questions, patriotically, sincerely and faithfully understands the narratives in view of the foregoing concerns and worries and decided to request for the immediate release of the white paper/report on the last Visitation Panel to Colleges of Education, which is long overdue, and to implement its content, which will serve as a basis for the take off of the Panels; douse tension and mitigate breakdown of industrial relations.
Secondly, the Union asked for immediate constitution of Governing Councils for Colleges of Education, for the smooth running of the institutions; and
Inclusion of seasoned Academics & Administrators from Colleges of Education subsector.
Thirdly, the Union also, demanded that in the composition of the Visitation Panels to Colleges that Mr. President to kindly intervene by ensuring that the report of the last Visitation Panel to Colleges of Education is released and also constitute Governing Councils for Colleges of Education.
While appreciating quick intervention of the Mr. President, the Union look forward to positive response with a view to addressing the worries and concerns to avoid industrial disharmony.

The Gombe State Ten Year Development Plan will be a pace-setter and brings prosperity, unity and development to the people. By Ben Ngwakwe,Gombe.

The launching of Gombe State Ten Year Development Plan 2021-2030 which although Nations hope, wish, desire and pray to develop, has not been the case, in most Nations of the world because of one reason or other but the Gombe State Governor Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya took the bold step to take that giant eagle to actualize it bearing in mind the development of the state as a sine non quo.

The Chairman of the Technical Committee who is also the Deputy Governor, Dr Manassah Daniel Jatau who is a technocrat, academic, frontline expertise noted that despite the human and natural resources such as land, population and water which was asserted by some scholars as the most important elements for economic development, adding that some Nations including Nigeria continues to be underdeveloped, in short development becomes a mirage as it eluded Nations decades after decades, regimes after regimes because of lack of proper development plan.
Speaking at the 10 Year Development Plan at the Government House Gombe on Tuesday, the Chairman noted that the deviation from the above worrisome reality Gombe State which is Northeast Nigeria, under the leadership of Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya initiated a genuine, humane and apt move to ensure that the state witnessed appreciable level of development within the next ten years of it’s plan.
This, Dr. Manassah Daniel Jatau observed why the Gombe State Development Plan 2021-2030 was conceived to address absence of good governance, lack of transparency, accountability, foresight and indeed outright corruption which have been associated with the low/ near zero with lamentable level of development witnessed generally.
The Chairman pointed out that based on the”basic needs” observed during their campaigns which covered all the 114 wards together with the assessment of the state on assumption of office and building on the works of others, the Governor decided to confront the issue hence he embarked on meaningful projects that have impacted positively to the people.
The giant strides of the Governor, Dr Manassah Daniel Jatau further pointed out could be seen from both the socio- economic activities, education, health, agriculture, roads, environment, industrialization, water supply, capacity building and many more in all the sectors.

The product of the work,he noted was what they have humbly and respectably witnessed as it’s launching on tuesday.

No doubt, he also noted that the biblical injunction made it clear that “neither do people light a lamp and put it under a basket/ bushel, rather let your light so shine before men that they may see your good works”.
The deputy Governor further pointed out that Gombe State Development Plan would be an eye opener to some other states, organizations, individuals as well as serve as reference point from where other stakeholders would take ” dressings”, corrections, lessons and even pursue their rights.

He said the guide would serve also as a measuring stick of the performance of the present and future administrations in the state.
He equally appealed for contributions, support and feedback from individuals and organizations at both local and international levels to make Gombe State not only desirous land but where development and economic growth would be the order of the day.

Tangale Chiefdom: Gombe SSG Calls for Calm.

….Says Government Making Far- reaching Consultation on Appointment of Next Mai amongst Top three Contestants

Gombe State Government says it is making far reaching consultations with relevant stakeholders on who becomes the next Mai Tangle amongst the top three contenders presented by the Kingmakers.

The Secretary to the State Government, Professor Ibrahim Abubakar Njodi stated this while addressing news men shortly after a stakeholders meeting held at the Deputy Governor’s office.

He said the journey to the throne of Mai Tangle began when about 23 persons expressed interest for the position but through screening and some other important considerations in the selection process, the number was trimmed to 18 and eventually 3 candidates.

Those 3 candidates he further explained, secured votes from the king makers to emerge and are now equals in the eyes of the law irrespective of the number of votes they scored.

Professor Njodi said the names of the top 3 contestants who scored votes in the contest have since been forwarded to the state Governor, explaining that ” number of votes by kingmakers are not the determinants of who becomes an Emir or Chief, rather their votes only determine who makes the top 3 nominees to recommend to the Governor and nothing else”.

“You all know that the 2020 laws of Gombe State as amended gives the Governor the prerogative to select one from the top 3 candidates”.

On 25th January, 2021 the Governor of Gombe State assented to the Gombe State Chieftaincy Law, 2020. The relevant provision of the Law as to the appointment of an Emir or Chief is that the Council of Traditional Kingmakers of an Emirate or a Chiefdom shall nominate to the Governor three candidates for the vacant stool from among eligible members of the Royal Family. The Governor after due deliberation will then choose one of the candidates for appointment as an Emir or Chief. Appointment of an Emir or Chief is therefore the prerogative of the Governor.

“So the Governor alongside stakeholders are still making consultations to come up with what is good for the people”.

He said the seat of the Mai Tangle is such an important one that needs a careful consultation and background checks to arrive at who sits on it. He added that “Any sentiment or distrust in the process is uncalled for, because the three names submitted to the governor are bonafide sons, and all of them belong to the same lineage,”

While appealing for calm, Professor Ibrahim Abubakar Njodi said Government can only function and meet the yearnings and aspirations of the people in an atmosphere of peace.
