Gombe Governor Assures of Sustained Partnership with North- East Development Commission for Good of Citizenry.

…Urges National Assembly to Make NEDC Permanent Agency

Gombe State Governor, Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya says his administration will continue to work in partnership with the North-East Development Commission, NEDC for human capital development, especially in the Information Communication Technology, ICT sector.

The Governor stated this while speaking at the formal graduation ceremony and issuance of starter packs to 200 pioneer beneficiaries of the ICT training in the State and the distribution of learning materials and covid-19 preventive items to public and private schools, security agencies as well as Agricultural inputs to farmers in Gombe State.

Governor Inuwa Yahaya commended the NEDC for its efforts in building the capacity of the youths who form the bulk of the citizens of the State, describing the gesture as a demonstration of the commission’s readiness to address the teething problems confronting the North-East sub-region.

“We are all aware that the world has transformed into a global village courtesy of ICT and as a result nothing more than technology can drive processes in order to change for the better”.

He noted that the 21 century is one that is driven by technology, saying Gombe is sparing no effort towards keying into the digital era which prompted his administration to establish the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation which is working to take the State into the development world.

He commended the Ministry for its efforts so far in digitizing the process of governance in the State, expressing the hope that when the Gombe State Information Technology Development Agency comes on stream, the people of the state will come to appreciate the policy direction of his administration the more.

“Gombe State has a huge population of about 3.5 million people, close to 2/3 of them-65 to 70 percent are youths and majority of them unemployed, so the window that is created will enable them to key in and move forward and we shall be there to widen it so that everyone will be carried along so that at the end of the day the society and the economy will improve and our people in general will be better off “.

He said the North East Development Commission as an interventionist agency is doing well in the State whereas the Commission has intervened in several ways, ranging from the establishment of farm, skills acquisition and ICT training resource centres.

The Governor told the gathering that inspite of the strides of the Commission, his administration will not shy away from pointing out the needful to the agency, because the Government is much closer to the people and therefore knows their needs and challenges better.

He noted that since the NEDC is time bound, all efforts have to be made to ensure that interventions are properly channelled for the advancement of the people of the State and the sub-region as a whole.

He urged the National Assembly to consider making the North East Development Commission a permanent Government Agency, describing the NEDC as a child of necessity which the people of the State and by extension the North East sub-region will love to see it transcends from being a time bound body to a permanent one.

He disclosed that about 50 thousand people who fled insurgency in neighbouring states within the North East have been assimilated in Gombe State, which is currently putting a strain on the State’s resources of education, health and socal welfare among others.

The Governor congratulated the graduands for successfully completing the training, saying with the current trend in science, technology and innovation, there is wide window for them to participate and exhibit the knowledge learnt so that the rest of the youths who are yet to get the opportunity can participate in order to move the State forward.

“We shall continue to give that encouragement, support and the required resources because while in the office we discussed extensively with the distinguished Senator and the MD on the need for States to collaborate, on our part, if it means contributing, Gombe is ready to contribute whatever amount necessary in order to join hands and move forward”.

Governor Inuwa Yahaya urged the commission to ensure the speedy take-off of the Education Endowment Fund which is designed to assist the less previledged within the region to have access to education.

To this end, Governor Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya said since the headquarters of the Fund will be domiciled in the State, his administration has provided an office accommodation to house its personnel.

He said his government has equally allocated a plot of land for the North East Development Commission to build its zonal headquarters in the State.

The Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of the North- East Development Commission, Mohammed Goni Alkali said in line with the national agenda for Information and Communication Technology Development in Nigeria geared towards fast tracking and resuscitating the economy, the NEDC keyed in through the improvement of access to ICT in the North East sub-region.

He congratulated the graduands for successfully completing their training in phone repairs and graphic designs, saying starter packs have been provided to each of the graduating students and the sum of twenty thousand naira as a kick-off grant.

In addition, the NEDC has provided 1500 bags of improved rice seed, 4500 bags of fertiliser and cartons of agrochemicals for farmers, exercise books and branded face masks for public and private schools among others.

The Chairman Senate committee on special duties, Senator Yusuf Abubakar Yusuf enjoined the beneficiaries not to dispose off the materials given to them but to utilize them as stepping stone to greatness.

Earlier in his address of welcome, the Secretary to the Gombe State Government, Professor Ibrahim Abubakar Njodi, said the North East Development Commission is gradually closing the social and economic challenges’ gaps of the region devastated by insurgency.

In her vote of thanks, the Commissioner of Science, Technology and Innovation, Dr. A’ishatu Umar Maigari thanked Governor Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya for resuscitating the ICT sector through friendly policies and programmes.

The Governor later led other dignitaries to commission an ICT resource centre equipped by the NEDC which is located at the Education Resource Centre, Gombe.

Governor Inuwa Yahaya Presides over State Executive Council Meeting, as SEC approves over 3.2 billion naira contract for the installation of solar streetlights in Gombe.

…Phase 1 of Project to Cover 71 Kilometres of Roads Across State Capital

The Gombe State Executive Council has approved over 3.2 billion naira contract for the installation of solar street lights within Gombe metropolis and environs.

Briefing newsmen on the outcome of the 11th SEC meeting, the State Commissioner of Information, Hon. Ibrahim Alhassan Kwami said the decision by the State Government to change to the solar system as against the current generator- powered streetlights was consequent upon the ingenuity of Inuwa Yahaya-led administration in cutting cost, especially in the face of global economic meltdown occasioned by the covid-19 Pandemic and other realities.

The Commissioner disclosed that the project will take three months to complete and is expected to cover about 71 kilometres of Gombe township roads.

The cost of diesel is high; the last contract for the diesel that expired this month is N1.14 billion and the contract was entered into when the cost of diesel was not as high as this.

“ If we are to renew such contract now for the next one year, the cost may be twice that of the old one because of the increase in the cost of diesel, this is no longer sustainable given the present economic realities, hence the decision to revert to solar street lights which is known to be cost effective, environmentally-friendly and the current energy solution being adopted across the world”.

The Gombe State Commissioner of information said the company that will undertake the contract will also be responsible for maintaining the solar powered streetlights for the period of Five years, adding that in the contract package, the firm will also train locals in the maintenance of the street lights going forward.

However, speaking in specific terms on the solar powered street lights project, the Commissioner of works, Engr. Abubakar Bappah said the completion period for the installation of the solar street lights is 3 months, begining from the day the sites are handed over to the contractors, adding that the package of the contract includes the training of staff from the State Ministry of works and youths in the State so that afterwards the State can boast of a pool of engineers who can manage the solar system.

“The solar streetlight project is the first of two lots with the second one expected to cover 42 Kilometres dual carriage way.

Also approved at the State Executive Council meeting was the augmentation of Bambam-Tula -Yiri and Bambam- Mona Kutere- Loja road contracts.

The Commissioner of works said the augmentation follows consideration by the Inuwa Yahaya’s administration to execute project that will stand the test of time.

“The augmentation for the Bambam Tula Yiri road is Six hundred and thirty seven million One hundred and Eighteen thousand Two hundred and thirty naira while that of Bambam-Mona Kutere- Loja road stands at Seven and sixteen million Four and Twenty Thousand Four hundred and ninety six naira Ninety seven kobo”.

In the same vein, the State Executive Council has approved the sum of ninety seven million four hundred and thirteen thousand seven hundred and forty six naira as compensation to one hundred and twenty persons affected by the ongoing 2.9 billion Gombe State University-Malam Inna- Kagarawal erosion control project.

Commenting on the decision, the Commissioner of Environment, Dr. Hussaina Goje said for the project to be successfully implemented, the government had to undertake a Resettlement Action Plan (RAP) in line with the world Bank guideline.

She said the compensation only affects individuals who’s property are located within 5 meters radius on both sides of the erosion control works.

Speaking on the 10 year Development Plan for which the State Executive Council approved the sum of Twenty Seven million for its preparation, the state commissioner of finance and economic development, Muhammad Gambo Magaji said the plan, which will be unveiled on the 16th of this month, is precisional guide for would be investors and development partners to key into the dreams and aspirations of the State.

Gombe Governor Calls for More FG’s Support to Deal with Consequential Effects of Insecurity, Covid-19, Others.

…As Minister of State for Agriculture Visits Gombe

On Friday, Governor Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya of Gombe State received in audience, the minister of State for Agriculture and Rural Development, Hon. Mustapha Baba Shehuri who was in the state to flag-off the distribution of farm inputs to small- holder farmers as part of Federal Government’s intervention to mitigate the effect of covid-19 pandemic.

During the visit, Governor Yahaya informed the minister that, Gombe state, which is in the midst of all the north eastern states, is endowed with a lot of potentials with about 75 to 80 percent of its population engaging in farming activities.

These characteristics of the state, the Governor said, justify the urgency with which the people of the State need support to improve on their livelihood.

He stressed that the state suffers burden as a result of her geographical location.

“That has brought a lot of stress on our resources; agricultural, healthcare, infrastructure, water supply and so on. That has made us very vulnerable and we need the support of the federal ministry of Agriculture and all the federal ministries, departments and agencies for us to continue to shoulder that responsibility of displaced people and sustaining the means of livelihood of our people. 75 or 80 percent of our people are peasant farmers with a population of about 3.5 million people,”.

“Luckily we are blessed with the Dadinkowa dam, we are blessed with the Balanga dam and the Cham dam. These three dams and the other water bodies lying along the coast of the river Gongola make the State a very viable one for agricultural purposes”.

In addition to these features, Governor Inuwa Yahaya said the State is equally endowed with the Wawa Zange grazing reserve which is dubbed to be the largest in West Africa with a total land mass of a hundred and forty four thousand square hectares.

He said both the State and the Federal Ministry of Agriculture must work in synergy to consolidate on the Agricultural relationship which the Federal Government established with the State for many years.

Governor Inuwa Yahaya described the visit of the Minister of State for Agriculture as an indication that the FG is committed to not only giving interventions to farmers in the State, but also actualizing the Wawa zange grazing reserve project, urging the Minister to do more for the State for the benefit of the people.

“Post-covid, our people are really struggling to find their feet again so that they can move fast and catch up with the rest of the country. So we have to work together so that eventually we will achieve the purpose to which the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and indeed Federal Government through is chunning out for the benefit and welfare of our people”.

He said a concerted effort is needed to take the vast majority of the uneducated off the street, assuring the visiting Minister that the Gombe State Government will support any drive by the Federal Government to permanently engage the youths and women in the State.

The Governor said the State is sparing no effort towards the construction of both rural and urban roads network through its flagship project of network- eleven- hundred which seeks to build at least one hundred kilometres of road in each of the eleven Local Government areas of the State.

“Mentions have been made of roads of the Federal Ministry of Agriculture, I don’t know where those roads are, may be they are part of the constituency project of the Federal legislators but I have not seen any road that is being put by the Federal Ministry of Agriculture in Gombe State. So honourable minister I think we need to know. We work together to achieve our common and collective goals”.

Governor Inuwa Yahaya said Gombe State is famous in the production of food and cash crops, describing the Gombe grains market as an attestation to the prowess of the State in agricultural activities.

He said through synergy with the Federal Ministry of Agriculture, farmers in the State can have a guarantee for production and market, so that problems associated with farmers not getting value for their labour can be eliminated.

The Governor who restated his administration’s commitment to the development of Agriculture in the State, said upon assumption into office in May 2019, his Government did everything necessary to supply fertilizer to farmers in the State where each of the 114 wards of the State got at least one trailer load of the inorganic manure.

This, the Governor said, was in addition to last year’s timely distribution of 12 thousand tonnes of fertiliser to farmers in the State despite the covid-19 Pandemic.

Governor Inuwa Yahaya said for there to be any meaningful progress in the Agriculture sector, both the State and the Federal Ministry of Agriculture must work together through the honest and patriotic service of Nigerians whose sense of integrity cannot be bought or sold.

Earlier speaking, the Minister of State for Agriculture, Hon. Mustapha Baba Shehuri said his ministry has the responsibility to promote and optimise Agricultural activities across the country as well as integrate rural development to transform the nation’s economy in line with the vision of President Muhammadu Buhari which is to ‘produce what we eat and eat what we produce’.

The Minister said the farm inputs brought to farmers in Gombe State are free of charge, expressing the hope that beneficiaries will utilize them to boost Agricultural activities in the State, leading to food sufficiency.

Shortly after the courtesy visit Governor Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya along side the Minister and some Government functionaries proceeded to the Gombe field office of the Federal Ministry of Agriculture where the Governor flagged off the distribution of the farm inputs to the cheers of the beneficiaries.
