Gombe State Governor, Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya has challenged participants of Executive Course 44 of the National Institute for Policy and Strategic Studies, NIPSS not to see their study tour on Local Government Administration in the State as a mere routine but a call to service towards proffering practical and workable implementation strategies and solutions that will address the challenges of the country, especially at the grassroots level.
Governor Inuwa Yahaya gave this indication when he granted audience to NIPSS officials and participants of executive course 44 who are on a study tour of Local Government Administration in Gombe State.
The Governor stressed that the study undertaken by EC44 and other fellows should be truthful and objective so that Government at all levels can leverage on such report for better administrative performance.
“We know our problems better than anybody who’ll come to study or under study but we need to relate; so tell us the truth so we can rectify but be on the side of justice and make sure you recommend proper implementation strategy”.
Governor Inuwa Yahaya observed that lack of implementing previous reports and findings by research institutions and other relevant bodies has been the bane of Nigeria’s social, economic and political underdevelopment.
He told the team to assess local governance and performance in the state that the local system in Nigeria is rotten and needs an honest approach to be addressed.
He said: “You have come to study our local governments principally and I believe you have seen the rots, but I know you will do justice to what you have seen, but all I will ask you to do is to, when you make up your report, please take them on side of implementation.
“Don’t just go and file them and stock them somewhere else. We know our problems better than anybody, but we need to relate, tell us the truth so that we will rectify, but be on the side of justice, make sure you recommend proper implementation,” the governor said.
The Governor noted with dismay that inspite of the comparative advantage Nigeria has over China in terms of natural resources, the Asia country has since advanced to become one of the leading players in global economy and politics.
This quantum leap, Governor Inuwa Yahaya maintained, was made possible due to the foresight, visionary and exceptional leadership qualities produced by Beijing and other Asia countries like Singapore and Malaysia.
He noted that Nigeria has diviated from prioritising productivity to becoming a consuming nation, saying it is practically impossible for country to consume what it did not produce and expect to stay afloat.
On current security challenges rocking the country, especially the North East sub-region, Governor Inuwa Yahaya applauded efforts by security Agencies in the State but called for more proactiveness in dealing with the situation.
“Like any other State in this country, especially up north, our greatest challenge at the moment is security. Yes compared to other states ours is relatively peaceful, but we are getting the threat because the pressure that has been exerted on the insurgents from the Eastern end of Borno and Yobe and equally from the bandits, cattle rustlers and kidnappers from the North West “.
He said due to the relative peace in Gombe State and its location at the centre of the North East , criminal elements often take advantage of the quiet environment to hibernate and plan their nefarious acts, saying his administration, in collaboration with security Agencies, is doing all that is necessary to wade off possible breakdown of law and order.
